Founded by William Ebsworth Hill at 38 New Bond Street, London in 1880, the name W. E. Hill & Sons built on a long family history of violin making, going back to William Ebsworth's great-grandfather, Joseph Hill. The firm soon gained a widespread reputation for excellence in repairs, making of instruments, bows, cases and fittings, as well as instrument identification and authentication.
Many fine craftsmen worked for the firm. For much of the 20th century, the Hill workshop employed England’s best bow makers, who created bows renowned for character and consistency. Hill violins, cellos, and cases are also highly regarded.
This antique cello, dated 1898, is an exquisite example of the craftsmanship coming out of the Hill firm at the turn of the 20th century. Featuring a thin light brown varnish with golden base, the cello is made with an evenly grained Spruce top plate. The 2-piece back and sides are made of a beautifully tight tiger-striped flame Maple.
The cello has been expertly repaired and restored over its 120 year lifespan, including minor top crack repairs and a re-angled fingerboard.  Currently fit with a carbon fiber endpin assembly, the cello is set up with a lightweight Akusticus composite tailpiece, and features a Stringvision 'C' Keypeg for optimal playing comfort.
The William E. Hill cello produces full, lush, and warm tonal qualities that match the physical beauty of this fine instrument. Features powerful projection with complex dynamics. A rare find.
